New Building CodesCalifornia adopts updated building standards California's new building code will incorporate international building and fire standards with state-specific rules. The state last updated its building code standards in 1997, and construction groups say the updates have been a high priority for several years. The new codes take effect on Jan. 1, 2008.Besides the new international codes, the publication will include portions of the 2005 National Electrical Code, the 2006 Uniform Mechanical Code and the 2006 Uniform Plumbing Code.
